James Karinchak is on the disabled list, but he will accompany Cleveland on its six-game road trip, which begins Friday in Atlanta.

Impact Karinchak has been unable to throw this spring due to right shoulder fatigue before coming to camp. Karinchak will not need as extensive a ramp-up program as a starting pitcher because he is expected to serve as a one-inning reliever for Cleveland once healthy, but with Opening Day only two and a half weeks away, the right-hander may not be ready by the time the Guardians open the regular season. Provided that he navigates his throwing program free of setbacks, Karinchak should be in store for a brief spell on the IL to open the season.

Karinchak signed a one-year contract with the Guardians worth $1.9 million on Thursday to avoid arbitration, according to Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Impact Karinchak walked 28 hitters in 39 innings in 2023, yet he still maintained a 3.23 ERA with 52 strikeouts. While Emmanuel Clase is almost probably locked into the closer job in Cleveland, Karinchak might be a reliable provider of holds.

Karinchak (2-5) took the loss Tuesday against the Reds, allowing a run on two hits and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
Impact Karinchak had gone 3.2 scoreless innings in his first four appearances back in the majors before falling in the fifth Tuesday. This season, the right-hander has a 3.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 52:25 K:BB ratio, 13 holds, and two blown saves in 38.1 innings. Karinchak is mostly seeing low-leverage labor to complete the campaign.
