Breaking: Cardinals Hurler Closing In On Proposed Move To Join Atlanta Braves

Would a trade make sense with the Braves involving the veteran hurler?

The St. Louis Cardinals made a concerted attempt to improve their starting rotation this offseason.

In 2023, St. Louis experienced one of its worst seasons in recent memory, with a limited starting rotation being a major contributing factor. The Cardinals struggled early in the season due to injuries. The Cardinals had some talent with Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty, but they traded them away before the deadline.

The Cardinals attempted to reload this past offseason by adding Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn. St. Louis’ rotation has improved, but the team still ranks last in the National League Central, with a 9-12 record.

The trade deadline is still a few months away, but talk is already picking up. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer developed a list of club needs and available choices to meet them. Surprisingly, he mentioned Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn as a candidate for the Atlanta Braves in a deal.

“Speaking of contenders that are looking at going the rest of the year without their No. 1 starter, Atlanta is likely to end up in that boat as well,” he said. “There is still no official word on what Spencer Strider will face, but we do know he has a damaged UCL in his right elbow.” That usually entails Tommy John surgery, and he’s previously undergone one of those…

Potential solutions include Jesús Luzardo, José Quintana, Lance Lynn, and Frankie Montas…Lynn should not be disregarded out of hand, however. He’s generally solid for bulk innings, and this year he’s got a 2.63 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.”

Lynn has a club option for 2025, but can choose to become a free agent at the end of the season. While this is the case, it is exceedingly doubtful that St. Louis will deal Lynn, particularly to Atlanta.

St. Louis spent the winter seeking for ways to enhance their starting rotation. It would make little sense to trade away the players they signed to do so.
