Breaking: Raiders Closing In On Deal To Sign $20.2 Million Veteran CB As Free Agent

A team can overcome its obstacles in preparation for the 2024 NFL season by selecting from among the many excellent players still available in free agency. The secondary, especially at cornerback, is one area where the Las Vegas Raiders could certainly use some work.

Though none of them have more than two interceptions, the youthful group of Jack Jones, Nate Hobbs, and Jakorian Bennett has shown some promise. As no Raiders player had more than three in the previous campaign, a seasoned acquisition might be necessary.

The Raiders may be looking to sign a veteran cornerback in free agency, since players like Adoree Jackson, Xavien Howard, and Stephon Gilmore are still available, according to Moe Moton of Bleacher Report:

Former Defensive Player of the Year Gilmore is coming off a successful season in which he recorded a career-high number of total tackles while playing for the Dallas Cowboys. Despite sustaining a foot injury at the close of the previous season, two-time All-Pro Howard is now cleared to participate in all football-related activities. He has 29 interceptions in his career. In his seven-year career, Jackson has played in three seasons with the New York Giants and has intercepted 56 passes.

Both on the field and in the locker room, having an experienced presence at the defense’s back end may be quite advantageous. Strengthening the secondary is essential for the Raiders defense, which has had trouble forcing turnovers the last two years.

With a defensive line led by Maxx Crosby and free agent addition Christian Wilkins and the pressure they can create, the secondary could have many opportunities to make big plays, and bringing in one of those veterans could pay huge dividends.

Raiders agree to one-year, $3 million deal with WR Michael Gallup

The Raiders have already added a veteran to their defensive line, so they are now looking to add one more on the defensive end. Michael Gallup, a former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, signed a $3 million, one-year contract with the team.

Gallup’s career with the Cowboys began brightly, but after tearing his ACL in 2021, he has found it difficult to get back into shape. Perhaps, though, a change of location will enable him to regain the form he displayed in the past.
