Breaking: Commanders $72 Million Star Closing In On Proposed Move To Join Houston Texans

Among the offseason moves the Washington Commanders made to strengthen their roster was selecting Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick. But according to USA Today’s Cory Woodroof, the team is still in “rebuild mode” and would be open to adding more draft picks. The Commanders would send Jonathan Allen to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick, according to a trade proposal from Woodroof.

Commanders get: 2025 first-round pick

Texans get: Jonathan Allen

In his May 7 piece examining five trades he’d love to see during the summer, Woodroof wrote, “The Commanders are squarely in rebuild mode, and having two high-priced defensive tackles on the roster might be a problem in the future as the team could load up on draft picks while building out its roster for the future.” Although Allen is the defensive line’s most seasoned player, he still merits the opportunity to compete against a young squad like the Texans.

“The Texans should definitely just follow the Los Angeles Rams’ lead and use all of their first-round draft selections in an attempt to win a Super Bowl while quarterback C.J. Stroud is still playing.” Send the Commanders a first-round pick for Allen and add him to your formidable front seven; draft selections are for losers. For the remainder of the AFC this season, this would make the Texans even more terrifying.

The Texans, who finished 10-7 and won a postseason game the previous season, are among the league’s emerging clubs. Since Allen still has two years left on his four-year, $72 million contract that he signed in 2021, he would get to play for a contender for the following two seasons.

League Executives Wondering if Commanders Will ‘Consider Offers’ for Jonathan Allen

Jer’Zhan Newton was selected by the Washington Commanders in the second round of the draft, providing them with an additional pass rusher. The signing of Netwon “creates an interesting dynamic at defensive tackle,” per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. League management are unsure whether the Commanders will eventually decide to move Allen, according to Fowler.

“A few league executives are wondering if Washington will ever consider offers for Allen, who is due $15.4 million this year and $16.5 million next, below market for high-end tackles,” Fowler wrote on May 7. “Having three talented tackles is hardly a bad thing.” “According to the people I’ve spoken with, Washington will eventually need to either rework his contract or determine whether to consider trade interest, which it has previously rejected.”

With new head coach Dan Quinn being a defensive-minded coach after serving as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, the expectation is for the Commanders’ defense to improve after allowing the most points per game in 2023. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Allen will be a big help in fixing the defensive issues.

How Allen Would Help the Houston Texans

Throughout the previous three seasons, Allen has shown promise statistically. In 2022, he had 7.5 sacks, while in 2021, he had nine. Allen recorded the second-fewest sacks in 2023—5.5—since his debut season, when he participated in five games.

But throughout the season, the Washington Commanders traded for Chase Young and Montgomery Sweat, which may have contributed to his dearth of sacks.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans would make the Houston Texans even better than they already were. In terms of sacks, points allowed per game, and other important defensive metrics, Ryans guided his squad to top 12 finishes.

29 years old, Allen would bring them a veteran to help them continue building after an impressive season last year.
