Hull City player James Furlong may leave the MKM Stadium this summer due to interest from European clubs.


According to Slovenian newspaper Sportklub, Maribor is interested in signing the 22-year-old before the transfer window opens later this month.

The Prva Liga club is already preparing for next season, with an emphasis on improving their first-team squad.

Maribor finished second in the top flight table last year, losing out on the title by eight points, and will try to close the gap with champions Celje.

Acun Ilicali, the owner of Hull, is Maribor’s Turkish partner, and this link could assist close any deals this summer.

Furlong joined Hull last year from Brighton after a loan spell with Scottish club Motherwell.

However, the Irishman did not make a single league appearance for the Tigers, who nearly missed out on a play-off spot.

The full-back made his Yorkshire debut in an FA Cup third-round match against Birmingham City in January, which Liam Rosenior’s team lost 2-1.

Maribor has set their sights on the Irish defender, as the Slovenian club seeks to improve their left-back options for next season.

It remains to be seen whether Furlong can be persuaded to join the Prva liga club or prefers to stay closer to home.

Furlong switched to English football in 2019, from Shamrock Rovers to the Amex.

However, he has struggled for playing time, having made the majority of his games since his loan spell at Motherwell in 2023.
