Seal deal: West Brom seal deal for versatile 25-year-old

West Brom set to complete deal for versatile 25-year-old
West Brom are likely to sign IF Brommapojkarna defender Torbjorn Heggem, with a medical scheduled for today, according to The Athletic.
West Brom are looking for eye-catching newcomers after falling short of promotion during the 2023/24 season.
After finishing fifth for much of the season, the Baggies were defeated by Southampton in the play-offs. Carlos Corberan and his team will aim for one of the top two slots next time.

The transfer window started on June 14th, and it appears that The Hawthorns are about to make their first signing.

According to The Athletic, West Brom are likely to sign defender Torbjorn Heggem, who presently plays for Swedish club IF Brommapojkarna. The 25-year-old, who plays both centre-back and left-back, is scheduled to get a physical today (Tuesday) before making the transition.

Norwegian ace Heggem has been with his present club since February 2023, and his contract expires at the conclusion of the calendar year. The relocation will be his first journey outside of Scandinavia, having previously spent time in his homeland.
A valuable signing.
It will be hoped that the Heggem transaction goes smoothly, but West Brom will not take anything for granted until it is finished and their new defender signs the contract.

Nonetheless, the Baggies appear to have made good commercial decisions.

Heggem, who has spent the majority of his career at left-back, brings vital versatility to the backline. However, his stature will allow him to easily step into a major role in the Championship.

Domestic signings are simpler, but exploring outside could pay off for West Brom. It has the potential to open up a hitherto untouched market where transactions are substantially less expensive than bringing in experienced players from league clubs.

Current defensive options:
Heggem’s signing as a left-sided defender fills a significant vacancy in Corberan’s lineup.

He may compete with Conor Townsend for the starting left-back position, allowing Zac Ashworth to return. Or, as a left-sided centre-back, he can replace Erik Pieters and account for Cedric Kipre’s impending departure.

It appears to be a wise move for West Brom, and with an agreement in place and a physical arranged, Heggem might be officially on the books at The Hawthorns soon enough.
