Breaking: Cardinals Closing In On Major Move To Sign Marlins All-Star
St. Louis could use another outfielder and one All-Star may be available
It’s surprising that the St. Louis Cardinals haven’t had much depth in the outfield this year.
Talk of the Cardinals having a log jam in the outfield in 2023 was common in that year. This past winter, St. Louis dealt slugger Tyler O’Neill to the Boston Red Sox in an attempt to reduce the glut of outfielders, but the team had no idea what would come next.
Although the Cardinals appeared to have more outfielders going into the 2024 season, injuries and patchy play had completely destroyed the team. After suffering an injury early in the season, Lars Nootbaar is now healthy. Due to injuries, fellow outfielders Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson haven’t played in a game this season.
Following offensive struggles, young outfielders Victor Scott II and Jordan Walker were both sent to the minor levels. The Cardinals are truly lacking in depth at the outfield position overall.
Carlson ought to return shortly, but it’s not clear when Edman, Walker, or Scott might rejoin the team. It could be wise to think about including an outside option to assist as a result.
Jazz Chisholm Jr., an All-Star with the Miami Marlins, is one guy who would be a great fit. Although he hasn’t had the season-long start he had hoped for, at only 26 years old, he still has potential to aid the Cardinals.
Miami has already begun making big moves this season because of how poorly it has struggled. It wouldn’t be shocking if the Marlins made more trades after dealing fellow All-Star Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres.
According to Fox Sports 640’s Andy Slater, Marlins President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix even hinted at the possibility of a deal including Chisholm.
“Peter Bendix says he doesn’t know what to expect when I asked if Jazz Chisholm Jr. would be on the Marlins roster at the end of the season,” stated Slater.
Chisholm has crushed four home runs and driven in 18 runs so far this season while seeing time in center field and as the designated hitter. If he’s available, St. Louis at least should give Miami a call.
