Breaking: Commanders Set To Sign Bargain $4.8 Million WR In Proposed Deal
Following the Washington Commanders’ selection of Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, they may try to surround him with more weapons. The team acquired Austin Ekeler and other players in the draft and free agency to arm the No. 2 pick after losing out on Curtis Samuel to the Buffalo Bills in free agency. The Commanders would acquire another weapon for Daniels in a suggested deal with Rico of Bleacher Report, the San Francisco 49ers.
Instead of landing Debbiebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk, the transaction lands Jauan Jennings. The 49ers would receive a fifth-round pick as part of Rico’s deal.
“So I got Jauan Jennings to the Commanders from the 49ers. They get a fifth-rounder in this one here. Obviously, this one is a no-brainer for me,” Rico said on his NFL trade ideas stream. “You get help in the slot. I know Luke McCaffrey’s there, but you get a big, experienced slot that you can work in with Jahan Dotson, they can work in with Scary Terry.”
How Jauan Jennings Would Help the Commanders
Terry McLaurin is a true Pro Bowl player with the Washington Commanders. Outside of McLaurin, though, the weaponry should be better.
Hanan Dotson, the number-two receiver for the Commanders, averaged 10.6 yards per catch with 518 yards on 49 receptions. Thought to be a threat as both wide receiver and running back, Ekeler’s 2023 season had his lowest amount of receiving yards since 2020.
McLaurin is the only receiver on the squad who ended with more than 518 yards as of the start of the current season.
While playing for the San Francisco 49ers alongside Christian McCaffrey, Samuel, and Aiyuk, Jennings did not conclude the 2023 campaign with more than 518 yards either. Jennings could see a different position with the Commanders.
The 26-year-old finished with 265 yards on 19 receptions, averaging 13.9 yards per catch. Jennings is also set to make just $4.8 million in 2024.
Commanders Still Need Wide Receiver Help
Even with the draft, the Washington Commanders still need wide receiver support.
After the NFL draft, wide receiver was ranked third on A to Z Sports’ list of the Commanders’ top three needs.
Winter noted on April 30 that “the Commanders drafted Luke McCaffrey and signed Olamide Zaccheaus in free agency, but the group still needs some more experienced help.” Similar to the cornerback room, things don’t go well if even one of Terry McLaurin or Jahan Dotson misses time.
Washington should enlarge the space as well. Right now, 6-foot-4 Brycen Tremaine is the only wideout on the squad who is taller than six feet one. Nobody is able to win contested red zone catches or go up and high point the ball. A wideout who can do that is necessary when your quarterback is as good as Daniels.
At six feet three, the San Francisco 49ers receiver would provide them with the height that Winter mentioned.
Choosing to surround a quarterback with the second overall choice in the draft can only be beneficial. The intention of Daniels’ draft, according to Commanders Wire’s Bryan Manning (April 26), is to provide him with all the assistance he requires.
“The goal now is to surround him with plenty of help,” Manning wrote.
